Revansiddha Temple
Revansiddha temple is located in the small village of Renavi, a part of the Sangli district of the state Maharashtra, India. This small peaceful village is less that 20 km square in area, and is a set in a plateau region, a part of the Western Ghats that stretch along the state of Maharashtra. According to the legends, the Revan Mountain was originally made up of five metals and eventually eroded to its present state. White crystals are still abundantly found in the mountain region. These crystals are used by devotees as bhasma or ash that is considered holy and pure. It is believed that this ash absolves people’s impurities – be they mental or physical in nature. The different coloured soils found in the region are a clear indicator of various mineral compositions.
The Revan Mountain is believed to be very holy and pure. It is said that as many as eighty four pilgrimage sites or what are known as tirthas were once a part of this holy mountain. However, only six of these sacred sites have stood by the test of time. The tirthas now in existence are a gomukh, two haranyaks and three flower gardens.
Revan is well known for the Revan Siddha temple, a sacred site devoted to the great saint of repute, Revan Siddha. This ancient temple is said to have been built in the 16th century A.D. Every year in February, a fair is held at the day of Mahashivaratri. Thousands of devotees from all over India – be it nearby places like Sangli Solapur or far flung states like Karnataka – are seen thronging the village at these times.
About the Temple
Saint Revan Siddha was an important nath panthiya yogi. He is said to have been under special favour of the Lord Sri Dattatraya. He is also very popular among the Lingayat community. This is because they believe that Lord Sri Dev Revansiddhanath met the main saint of the Lingayat community, Sri Siddheshwar Maharaj in Sholapur city during Gurubhet and granted him Diksha. A temple was built to honour the great saint at some point of time in the 16th century AD. This temple continues to exist and draw devotees to itself.
The Revansiddha temple can be easily spotted on the Chiplun-Karhad-Bijapur road. On the south side of this road, the temple is located at a spot that can be seen almost as soon as the plateau is reached. On the east of the shrine, one can see the Urul Siddh. Towards the west of the mandir, lies the Visvaradya located within a tunnel.
A number of devotees and disciples of the saint Lord Sri dev Revansiddhanath are spread all over the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka; and visit the temple is large numbers, usually during the Mahashivaratri festival held in February. Locals of the area have great faith in the powers of Lord Sri Dev Revansiddhanath and his temple and believe that this deity keeps them at peace and tranquillity. The temple premise has been taken over by the government of India to ensure proper maintenance and upkeep of the historical site.
