Maharashtra- Gateway to the Heart of India

Maharashtra is quite bigger than most of the other states in the country. There are beautiful mountains that can be found at the backdrop due to the state’s proximity to the Western Ghats.  The state houses many ancient and architectural temples and forts that have interesting legends behind them.

This is a very colourful state where there are lots of festivals celebrated all through the year with huge festive fervour. Most of the people in the state participate actively and energetically in all the celebrations. The beautiful silvery beaches that expand across calmly over the coastal line are a sheer delight for the tourists who come here in large numbers every year.

The people of Maharashtra lead very diverse lifestyles, wear different kinds of attire, use different kinds of cooking methods, follow various types of cultures etc. However, they are bound together by a spirit that is so characteristic of this state. During the historic period, choli and sari were the main costumes for women whereas dhoti and pheta were the main costumes for men. Nowadays, the dressing style has evolved and changed according to the recent fashion trends in the foreign countries.

Maharashtrian, Konkani and Varadi are the three most reputed cuisines in the state. The first one is quite hot as there is a lot of pepper content in it, whereas the other two are simply out of the world. The sea food cooked in Konkani style can please even the harshest food critic. When it comes to eating out, one must try the various chat items available in the street stalls of Mumbai as they are quite delicious.

There is no dearth for entertainment in Maharashtra as the dance forms of Lavani, Koli and Povada are performed during festivals in accompaniment with musical instruments that play rhythmic music. Some of the commonly performed folk dances performed in this region are Kala, Tamasha, Dhangri Gaja and Dindi. The local language of Maharashtra, Marathi is spoken by about 70% of the people according to census data of 2001.

Maharashtra is characteristic of its forts that are located on the hills, land and sea. Since the time of Peshwas, there have been lots of forts built in and around the state. Forts that are hot tourist attractions are Pratapgad, Raigad, Sinhagad, Sindudurg and Vijaydurg. The Konkan Coast is brimming with a lot of historic forts and monuments.
