20 Smart Cities to Focus on These Top 10 Areas

In a first of its kind innovation in India, around 98 smart cities will be selected from all over the country for carrying out various schemes that are implemented by the Government. For this year, 20 smart cities have been identified and in the next 2 years, 40 and 38 cities will be declared “smart cities” respectively. City managers and citizen participants came up with a long list of proposals for making their respective cities smarter and better.
The top ten areas of these proposals are:
- Better access to public transport
Faster, better and cheaper public transport is one of the key areas discussed by these smart cities. With the use of Information & Communications Technology, these smart cities have brought about proposals through which use public transport is encourage, private vehicles are reduced and traffic congestion is controlled by a great extent. Some of the facilities that are in favour of this are Jaipur, Chennai, Surat, Pune, Indore, Udaipur, Belgavi and Devanagare.
- Give first preference to pedestrians
Non-motorised transport or priority to pedestrians is the next area that is targeted by the smart cities. Some of the plans here are installing wide footpaths, making Sundays as car-free days and using of cycles. Cities in favour of this are Chennai, Pune, Belgavi, Udaipur etc.
- Increased parking space
Management of on-street parking, pre-booking parking spots and online payments are some of the ideas in this proposal. Cities in favour of this are Bhubaneswar, Indore, Jaipur, Chennai and Guwahati.
- Traffic decongestion
Making use of technology for managing traffic intelligently, better management of traffic signal and prioritisation of BRTS buses and better video surveillance procedures are some of the ideas considered in this proposal by cities like Chennai, Udaipur, Indore, Surat, Ahmedabad etc.
- Better safety procedures
Better safety of residents through the use of LED lights, efficient parking and setting up of Common Control Centre for managing all signals are the proposals discussed here by cities like Chennai, Guwahati, Udaipur etc.
- Seamless civic services
Providing efficient and effective services to pedestrians under one roof, with the help of one common website, proper mapping system, Wi-Fi hotspots etc. are some of the activities suggested by Kochi, Vishakhapatnam, Devanagere, Ludhiana etc.
- Managing disasters
This proposal deals with effective management of natural disasters with the combined efforts of technology and human intervention, as put forward by cities like Chennai and Vishakhapatnam.
- Going Green
This proposal includes ideas for effective waste management and high-quality pollution control measures to bring about a green environment and clean roads, as put forward by cities like Kakinada, Indore, Jabalpur and Jaipur.
- Better utilisation of infrastructure
One of the main objectives of these smart cities is to maintain infrastructure properly and up to its fullest potential. Electricity, sewage, water supply, storm water drainage and some of the other systems should be used to their fullest potential, thanks to the effective use of technology.
10. Greener spaces
Lots of open and greener areas like parks, jogger parks and recreational areas are to be set up and developed all over India, as part of one of the main objectives of this smart city project.
