According to the old stories, Shiv Purana narrates the tale of this temple and says that Lord Shiva started residing here in the form of Jyotirlinga soon after he was being killed by the demon, Daruka. This place has earned its name from demon Daruka who eventually appealed the god to name this place after him. It is owing to this, that this place came to be known as Nageshwara Jyotirlinga Temple.

Others say that Daurka, the king of snakes, captivated a devotee of Shiva, whose name was Supriya. Supriya called Shiva to come and help. He came and rescued them. Since that time, it is said that Lord Shiva resides here in the form of Jyotirlinga.

Architecture of Temple

The Jyotirlinga in this Nageshwar Temple faces to the south. Just like other black rounded of Jyotirlingas, the linga in this temple is made of stone which is known as Dwarka Shila. Having small chakras on its top, this linga resembles a tri mukhi rudraksh. The Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is well known tourist destination which is filled by astounding architectural masterpieces.

The Gomugam to the east of this temple also attracts the tourists. The giant statue of Lord Shiva attracts the Hindu devotees by its aesthetic appeal.
