Temples In Gujarat

Dwaraka

This is a place that is visited the most in the state due to the world-famous Dwarkadish Temple; the temple of Lord Krishna. It is believed that the Lord was born here. This temple built around 1400 years ago, is an architectural wonder. There are around 5 floors in the temple and it is built fully from sandstone, on which certain intricate carvings are done.

Somnath

This ancient temple of Lord Shiva is another major temple in Gujarat. This temple has been demolished and reconstructed 8 times. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples that are dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is originally believed to have been built in gold by the Moon God, then in silver by King Ravan, in wood by Lord Krishna and in stone by Bhimdev. The structure that is now seen is the one that was renovated during 1950 and it is a close replica to what the temple once was.

Modhera Sun Temple

Built around 11th century, this temple dedicated to the Sun God is a close replica to the Sun temple at Konark in Orissa, though the former was built 200 years prior to the latter. The styles of architecture are exactly similar to both the temples. The grand structure of the temple is designed in such a way that during dawn the rays of the sun fall directly on the Sun God. The 52 pillars that are found here are intricately carved depicting stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Akshardham Temple

Dedicated to Swami Narayan, the Akshardham temple stands tall and majestic at Gandhinagar. As in the case of all temples constructed by the rich and famous Hindu Swami Narayan group, this temple too has a rich architecture. It took around 1000 people to build this temple. The temple is huge and has well-manicured lawns running along the sides. A whopping 6000 tonnes of pink sandstone was used to build this temple.  It was exposed to terrorist attacks during the year 2002.

Bala Hanuman Temple

This temple is located beside the picturesque Ranmal Lake at Jamnagar. From the 1st of August 1964 till date, there has been continuous chanting in the temple of Lord Ram’s names. This has helped the temple get into the Guinness Book of Records. Visitors who come here must ensure that they visit the temple just when evening sets in, because the areas around the temple tend to get dark during the latter part of evening.

Bileswhar Temple

This is a very old temple that was constructed during as early as 7th century. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is found near Porbandar. The structure of the temple is quite unique as it looks like a pyramid. There are exquisite motif-works on the external structure of the temple.
