Location and History

Umed Garden is located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, a place that’s synonymous with Rajasthani traditions and culture. Visitors can learn a lot about the rich history of the region’s past in its many forts and palaces. Jodhpur is famous for its numerous picturesque gardens of which Umed Garden gets top ranking by virtue of its sheer size and the splendor associated with it.

Umed Garden was conceived and developed under the aegis of Maharaja Umed Singh. It is spread over a sprawling 82 acres and designed expertly to help visitors move around the garden in a systematic manner and enjoy the beauty of the flora and fauna of the place in the best possible manner without missing out on anything. Umed Garden is located very close to the Umed Palace. It was inaugurated by Viceroy Willingdon.

Details

A visit to the garden provides a welcome change from the monotony that sets in from seeing the numerous forts and palaces in the city. The garden has well-maintained green lawns. You will be amazed by the sheer variety of flowers but roses dominate the garden space. There are tall Ashoka trees, sparkling fountains and even a zoo inside the garden, making it the ideal place to spend some quality time for people of all ages.

The Zoo

The zoo can be of special interest to children. You will be able to see birds like pigeon in the natural environment. There are many varieties of crocodiles also here. Besides, you can also see monkeys, deer, leopards, lions, tigers, ostrich, zebras and emus. The vastness of the Umed Garden and the large number of visitors it attracts on a daily basis necessitated the construction of five gates to facilitate easy entry and exit without experiencing inconvenience. These five gates lead to five different locations of the garden. The garden was conceived with the purpose of educating kids about the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it.

The Walk-In Aviary

One of the latest additions to the many features of the Umed Garden is the Walk-in Aviary. This was constructed in the zoo section of the garden in the year 1978. The aviary is home to an amazing variety of both common and exotic birds. You can see African and Australian parrots hers. There are ducks lazing around in the pond or walking aimlessly in the sprawling space. The best thing about the aviary is that all the birds and animals are kept in the natural surroundings. Just opposite the aviary is a large cage for bears.

The garden is a great place for hours of recreation and enjoyment for both adults and children. The garden’s lush green environment, the amazing varieties of flora and fauna and the peaceful settings make it a must-visit destination for all kinds of tourists.

The Government Museum

The Government Museum in the garden complex is another major attraction for tourists. The museum is home to a wide collection of weapons, fabrics and cloth material used by the people and royalty of the past, local arts and crafts, miniature portraits, and images of Jain Tirthankar.

There is an entry fee of INR 3 for Indians and INR 10 for foreigners.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Umed Garden is during the winter months that begins from late October and lasts till March.
