Nehru Garden

Nehru Garden, which is named to honor the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru is a beautifully designed oval-shaped island that has become one of the most popular tourist spots in the city of Udaipur in Rajasthan. The garden within the island which covers an area of 4.5 acres has a pond, well-maintained flower beds, lush green plantations and more.

Nehru Garden is located in the center of Fateh Sagar and gives a beautiful view of the famous Moti Mahal, the palace which was home to the fearless Rajput ruler, Maharana Pratap. The garden was inaugurated on 14th December 1967 on the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru.

The lake was first created by the then ruler of the region, in 1687, Maharana Jai Singh in 1687. Two hundred years later, heavy floods in the region caused massive erosion of the earthen bund which formed the enclosure of the lake. It was reconstructed in 1888 by the ruler of Mewar State, Maharana Fatah Singh. The foundation stone for the new construction was laid by Duke of Connaught; the third son of Queen Victoria.

Every part of this popular garden has been designed with a lot of emphasis on beauty and creativity. The lake has attractive pyramid-shaped water fountains designed on the lines of Brindavan Gardens of Mysore. The newest attraction added to the garden is a boat-shaped floating restaurant in the north-west direction of the park.

Nehru Garden offers a comprehensive view of the nearby Aravalli hills and the historic Moti Mahal. Tourists can reach the garden using boat service available from the Fateh Sagar Lake. On a lucky day, tourists can see and hear the sounds of peacock from nearby the lake.

The authorities charge a fee of INR 30 for adults and INR 15 for children. Foreigners have to pay INR 125 and 60 for adults and children respectively. The garden is open to visitors from 9 AM to 6 PM on all days of the week.
