Gulab Bagh, also known as Sajjan Niwas Garden, takes a pride of place as the largest garden in Rajasthan. It is spread over 100 acres and is well known for its large varieties of roses. Gulab Bagh, literally translated means the Garden of Roses. It has amazing varieties of roses which are not generally seen in India, and that’s its USP. Another high point is the terrific arrangement of flower beds. The garden can be called a colorful ensemble of flowers; more specifically, roses.

Built by Maharana Sajjan Singh during the 1950s, the Bagh stands out as a glorious exception in the desert state of Rajasthan. It has a tremendous lot to offer to the tourists. There is an amusement park for the kids and adults and a walking track to energize the mind and body. The Victoria Hall Museum and Library offers plenty of reading stuff.

History

A creation of the imaginative ruler Maharana Sajjan Singh, the Gulab Bagh is one of the best places to be on a visit to Udaipur. The place will leave a mesmerizing impact on those who treasure nature and beauty. The fragrance of the huge range of roses and the stunning arrangement make this place surely worth a visit. It is one of the most popular and largest gardens of Udaipur. Apart from the large varieties of roses, the Garden also has a Lotus Pond and lots of trees that offer various types of fruits and spices.

The trees at Gulab Bagh sport name plates in Hindi and English so that visitors can easily identify the species. The garden got its boundary wall constructed in 1885-86. It was then divided into various parts according to the various types of flowers, trees, and other parameters.

The Zoo

The small zoo here is well-maintained and has many animals making it a must-see place for children. The zoo houses animals like tigers, leopards, gazelle birds, Chinkara, female leopard, and birds of various species. There are closed circuit cameras to keep the animals under constant watch.

The Victoria Hall Museum

The Museum is a major attraction of the Bagh and is known for its collection of interesting antiques, curios, and other common items that were used in the royal household. There are some exciting relics from the era gone by that make for interesting viewing. The museum encases the rich heritage and culture of Rajasthan with the display of a large collection of items excavated at various times, inscriptions, handicrafts, sculptures, and paintings. The inscriptions are from the 2nd century BC to 17th century AD. The most exciting collection displayed here is the nine thousand plus miniature paintings from the Mewar School. There is a section attributed to natural history which has models of various types of animals. The colorful Mewari turbans on display grab many eyeballs.

Saraswati Bhawan Library

The Saraswati Bhawan Library was constructed by Maharana Fateh Singh and has many books on history and archaeology. The library also has quite a number of manuscripts from the early medieval period.
