Brief History

Daman was earlier called 'Damao’. Daman is a small port city, a Union Territory situated near Surat in the south of Gujarat state, occupying about 12.5kms of coastline on the Arabian Sea in the Gulf of Khambhat. Daman is a quiet, laid back little refuge of peace and relaxation, far away from the noise and bustle of the big cities. It’s located on the mouth of the Damanganga river, which divides the city into Nani Daman, meaning Little Daman, in the north; and Moti Daman, or Big Daman, to its south.  It was a part of Portuguese India until the 19December1961. Earlier Goa, Daman and Diu were considered to be a single Union Territory before Goa was declared as a separate state in1987. The city is enveloped by the state of Gujarat. The languages popularly spoken in the place are Gujarati, Marathi and English. The Portuguese impact still survives in these areas, visible in some places, through all churches and houses and in others through small population who still speak Portuguese.

Daman Ganga Toursist Complex

A beautiful and well maintained Garden by the Tourism department has a cafeteria, an Amphi Theatre, giant waterfall, fountains, island garden, boating facility etc.

Devka Beach

Visibly beautiful but dangerous rock formations along the coastline is the unique identity of this beach. It is one of the most popular beaches of Daman and attracts a lot of tourists for its beauty.

Jampore Beach

Kadaiya Lake Garden can be visited in almost any month of the year. The months between October to May can be regarded as the ideal one. This is the time when the city is seen at its full bloom.
