Traditional Heritage

Dhurries are used in numerous ways depending upon their kind of material, size and purpose. Gujarat is famous for its historical background with respect to culture and tradition. Textiles have been one of the points of attraction for the state in the history. Dhurries are woven in the village of Kutch as archaic pit looms. Attractive use of colours in textiles and art works are motivating factor for the buyers and users of this rug. Workers weaving dhurries on manual machine give shape with their hands which is like giving a new birth to the wool. Types of Material

Dhurries are generally woven with four different types of material. Cotton is generally opted for manufacturing soft rugs. Wool is a material obtained from sheep. Woollen textiles are used in winter days. Silk is a fibre produced by an insect called silkworm. Jute is basically a strong thread used in manufacturing of ropes. There are other states in this kind of manufacturing but Gujarat makes a difference with its traditional values and its reflection in their quality. The proper combination of quality, colour, material and quantity of product creates a superior finished product.

Manufacturing

Dhurries are manually prepared either by horizontal or vertical looms. Traditionally weaving machine was used for weaving, lace making or knitting of these rugs. Weaving is done in three major steps i.e. shedding, picking and battening. On advanced looms, shedding operations are done automatically. There are different types of modern looms used in weaving these days.

Types of Loom

There are many types of looms like back strap loom, warp weighted loom, handloom, traditional looms, power looms and circular looms which are used according to their specialities. The advancement in the machine has been done to improvise the end product. These improvisations are easily accepted by the state of Gujarat. It‘s effect on the product resulted in product durability, working efficiency of craftsman. The workers are also able to produce more products due to enhanced mechanisms.

Importance

Dhurrie also carries a lot of customary importance in the country like India. Many religions have their traditional importance and history behind it. Gujarat is well known for its cultural background and well kept institutions for promoting the art.
