Matheran

Matheran, in Maharashtra, is a Hill Station and a public council in the Raigadh region within the Indian state of Maharashtra. Matheran is a hill station in Karjat Tehsil and among all, it is also the smallest hill station in India. It is situated on the top of the Western Ghats, vary at an altitude of about 800 m above marine level. It is positioned approximately 90 km starting from Mumbai, and 120 kilometer from Pune. History

Matheran was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the area collector of Thane quarter in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Adamjee Peerbhoy & covers a distance of 20 km (12 mi), over large swathes of forest territory. It (Matheran) has been stated as an eco sensitive district by the Union surroundings Ministry and can also be called a Health clinic in itself. The only type of automobile acceptable in Matheran is an ambulance operated by the town. No personal automobiles are permitted.

Transport

This hill station is well linked to Mumbai (100 km) and Pune (120 kilometer) via rail & road, whereas Neral is the closest rail station. The nearby airport is Chatrapati Shivaji Int. Airport, Mumbai which is situated approximately 100 km far from Matheran. This old Matheran Hill Railway offers many daily trains towards Neral & this takes about hours for about 8 km distance but it is a railway exploration.

Sightseeing in this Hill Station
