Igatpuri Hill Station – One of the Best Places to Visit in Monsoon

Located on the Western Ghats, Igatpuri is a small hill station town located in the Nashik district of Maharashtra. It is one of the best places in Maharashtra to be visited in monsoon season and is also renowned for the Vippassana International Academy of Buddhists where an ancient meditation technique called as Vippassana is taught.

Igatpuri is located in the midst of some of the highest peaks of Sahyadri ranges and most of these peaks have forts built by the Satavahana dynasty. Some of the differentiating factors which make Igatpuri a unique destination among tourists include quaint old forts, numerous waterfalls, soaring mountains, lush green vistas and salubriously pleasant climate those who seek a spiritual rejuvenation can also visit Igatpuri to learn ages old meditation techniques.

History

Igatpuri’s strategic location in the Thal Ghat made it is an important place in older times. Many kings and communities built their forts on the mountains around Igatpuri and its historic significance can be witnessed from the ruins of several forts located around this town. Ratangad fort and Tringalwadi fort are among the most popular forts, often visited by tourists for their archaic presence and huge structures. This region also possesses several ancient temples, some of which have been in existence since 11th century, including Amruteshwar and Ghantadevi temples.

Tourist Attractions in Igatpuri

Nestled beautifully in the midst of Sahyadri mountain range, Igatpuri is a visual treat for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Rock climbing and trekking are among some of the most preferred activities in this area.

Bhatsa river valley is a stunning valley located in the basin of magnificent Bhatsa River and is one of the most beautiful & picturesque spots flaunting the flow of river from some majestic rocks.

Arthur Lake, formed by Pravara River’s water in the Bhandardara region is like a splendid jewel in the middle of dense greenery. This placid lake is one of the most visited tourist places in Igatpuri.

Located at an altitude of 3000 Ft above the sea level, the Tringalwadi Fort offers an astounding view of the entire region and is an architecture marvel. This fort can only be accessed by a narrow pathway down towards Tringalwadi lake, and trekking on this path towards the fort is an amazing experience in itself.

Camel Valley is a beautiful valley located a few metres away from Bhatsa valley. A waterfall formed by the rainwater near this valley is the prime tourist attraction, as the waterfalls from a height of 1000 Ft.

There is also a series of five consecutive waterfalls near the Ghantadevi temple, which fall one below the other form a panoramic view.

Igatpuri is not a big city, rather it’s a small town but owing to its visitors influx it possesses several accommodation options. There are many mid-range and budget hotels in the place offering contemporary amenities apart from some lavish holiday resorts.

Where to Eat

Here, there are several multi-cuisine restaurants that serve a variety of food ranging from authentic Maharashtrian cuisine to South India, North India and Chinese food. The local snack, Vada Pav is very famous and is worth a try.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Though, the weather of Igatpuri stays pleasant throughout the year but summers are particularly breezy and amusing. However, the best season to visit this place is monsoon. Monsoon and rains augment the appeal of this beautiful hill station characterized by rugged terrain and dense green forests. During monsoon, several waterfalls become alive and green vegetation lures the nature lovers & trekkers. Thus, the best time to visit the place is from June to September, and November to March.

Igatpuri is a small town in Maharashtra which is well connected to other parts of the state and country directly by rail and road, and indirectly by air.

By Air

The nearest airport to Igatpuri is Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport, Mumbai located at a distance of about 96 Km. Lohegaon airport of Pune is located at 133 Kms.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is in the town itself and is well connected to other cities of the country. It is an important destination on Delhi to Mumbai rail route.

By Road

Igatpuri can be easily reached by road by boarding a bus to Shahpur which is located at a distance of 37 Km from Igatpuri. On reaching Shahpur, you can find a number of buses plying between Igatpuri and Shahpur.
