Climate

Located on the eastern part of the Western Ghats, Vattavada is approximately 45 km from Munnar and is at an altitude of 6500 feet above sea level. However, the areas in and around Vattavada has varying heights. Temperatures are extremely low right through the year which makes life extremely pleasant for the locals as well as tourists who throng to this place in large numbers in peak holiday seasons.

Surroundings

Vattavada means a place surrounded by mountains. It describes the place perfectly as there are many mountain ranges around the main place. Koviloor, Kadavari, Chilanthiyar, Pazhathottam and Kottakombur are the main centers in the Panchayat. Koviloor which has many large and small temples is the headquarters.

What to Look For

The entire region of Vattavada is blessed with natural beauty. The clouds hang low in the mountains giving the place a heavenly look. There are lush green hills and numerous rivulets trickling down the hills making a pleasant sound. A wonderful mix of colorful flowers blooms here. The best part is that these flowers are more vibrant in their colors than the ones that grow in the lower lands of the area. Vattavada exhibits a varied bird life and animal life despite the deforestation that’s been affecting the region for some time now.

Vattavada is a unique place which not only receives plenty of sunshine and rainfall but is also pleasantly cold in the winter season. In any case, the temperature of the place does not reach unbearable levels in summer or winter but is extremely pleasant and healthy. Average temperature during winter months ranges from 10°C to 15°C. During summer, average monthly temperature is around 27°C.

Agricultural Activities at Vattavada

Agriculture was a major occupation at Vattavada even before the colonial period. The native Muthuva tribes and the migrants who have settled down here over the years have shaped the agricultural landscape. The methods of agriculture have undergone sweeping changes over years. Major crops produced locally at Vattavada include rice, wheat and finger millet, cabbage, carrot, beans, potato, peas, garlic, plantain of various varieties, passion fruit, pomegranate, citrus and lots more. The area is also known for the natural growth of many varieties of medicinal herbs.

How to Reach

By Road

Buses ply from Ernakulam and Kottayam to Munnar on a regular basis. Vattavada is another 45 km from Munnar. Private cars and taxis are also available on hire.

By Rail

The nearest railway station to reach Munnar is the Ernakulam Junction. It is around 130 km from the place.

By Air

Kochi International Airport is 110 km from Munnar. You can take a cab or a bus from Munnar to Vattavada.
