Vazhikkadavu Hills

Vazhikkadavu is a hill station that’s fast becoming one of the biggest tourist attractions of this region. It is located between Idukki and Kottayam, two of the most vibrant tourist districts of Kerala. You will be mesmerized by the amazing greenery, the blissful valleys and the inspiring rock formations. On one side of the hill station are gigantic rocks that stand out steep and tall while on the other side are plunging valleys that have scary depths. The Meenachil River cuts through the separation, weaving through like a silvery lace.

Location

Vazhikkadavu is situated on the Kozhikode-Nilambur-Gudalur road and is some 20 km north-east to Nilambur. It is just 10 km from the border that the state shares with Tamil Nadu. Vazhikkadavu falls in the Malappuram district of Kerala. It is the perfect vacation destination for those who want to get away from their busy schedule and from the stress and strain of life to catch some quiet moments of rest and relaxation in a surrounding that’s serene, earthly and peaceful. The place comes alive with a riot of colors as exotic flowers and plants emerge in full bloom from December through February.

Potential Gold Mine

The Marutha section of the Panchayat of Vazhikkadavu is believed to have major gold deposits. Research work is being carried out by the Geological Survey of India to study the nature and content of gold deposit for future recovery.

Festivities in the Region

The Easter Week sees thousands of devotees gather at the Kurisumala Vazhikkadavu which is three kilometers from the main hills. The place is regarded as sacred by Christians. There is a monastery on the top of the hill where devotees pay their homage. The Muruganmala Temple, cut out from a huge rock, lies to the east of Vazhikkadavu. Dedicated to the memory of the son of Lord Shiva, the temple is held in high esteem by devotees. On the route to Kurisumala, there are some inspiring sights that tourists can enjoy such as the brilliantly designed artificial lake and a stunningly beautiful house modeled to match European architecture.

Places to Visit Nearby

Vaikom Temple is about 40 km from Kottayam and is an ancient shrine believed to have been created by Parasurama. It is famous for its 16t century styled architecture. Vennimala is lush green vegetation place and a favorite tourist spot just 15 km from Kottayam. There is a huge cave, the entrance to which has been closed by falling boulders, just a kilometer and half from the temple. 64 km from Kottayam is the famous Vagamon hill ranges known for its pine tree forests.

By Road

There are buses plying to Vazhikkadavu from Kozhikode, Thrissur and Palakkad. Inter-state buses from Ooty, Mysore and Bangalore also pass through this place. You can also hire private cars and cabs from Kozhikode or Idukki.

By Rail

The railway stations nearest to Vazhikkadavu are Kottayam and Kuruppantara.

By Air

The airport nearest to Vazhikkadavu is the Kochi International Airport.
