Pullumedu which means green meadows in the local lingo lives up to its name perfectly. Situated on the banks of the famous Periyar River of Kerala, Pullumedu is one of the biggest tourist attractions for those who love the scent and sight of nature in its raw, unblemished form.

The remote areas of Pullumedu are virtually inaccessible and that has helped the eco-system maintain its balance here.

Tourists View the Famous Celestial Light from this Hill

Pullumedu is also famous for the majestic view it offers of the world famous Sree Ayyappa Temple of Sabarimala. Hundreds of thousands of devotees flock to Pullumedu to view the celestial light called the Makara Jyoti that appears in the sky during the temple’s famous Makaravilakku festival observed in the month of January every year.

Places to Visit near Pullumedu

Cheeyappara Waterfall in Idukki is a famous tourist place and is near to Pullumedu. Anjuruli waterfall is in the catchment area of the Idukki Arch dam and offers a stunning view of nature in its full glory. The Idukki Dam which is 554 feet tall and is built between two mountains is another must-see place for tourists visiting Pullumedu.

Best Time to Visit

The months after monsoon from September to December are ideal for visiting Pullumedu as the climate is cool and extremely pleasant. Also, the terrain gets draped in fresh and lush layers of green during the rainy season which adds to the enchanting natural beauty of the place.

The forest range is open to visitors from 6.00 AM to 7.00 PM on all days of the week. Pets are not allowed at Pullumedu.

How to Reach Pullumedu

Pullumedu is at distance of 43 Km form Thekkady and 26 km from Periyar.

By Road

The Ernakulam-Thekkady Road or the Anavilasam-Marykulam Road can be used to reach Pullumedu. Access is possible only using jeep or similar vehicles as the place is located with a forest zone with restricted access. You must take advanced permission from the Wildlife Preservation Officer at Thekkady or the Range Officer at Vallakkadavu to be able to enter Pullumedu.

By Train

Kottayam is the nearest railway station. You will have to take a 58 km drive from Kottayam to reach Pullumedu.

By Air

The nearest airport to go to Pullumedu by air is the Cochin International Airport which is about 225 km from the place.
