Situated just 15 km from Nedumkandom on the Munnar-Thekkady route, this magnificent hill station is truly reminiscent of heaven on Earth.

The Only Second Wind Farm Installation in the State

There is a steady, cool, calming breeze in the Ramakalmedu air which blows at a pleasant speed of around 30 km per hour all round the year. There is a wind-energy farm installed here; the second one of the state, which has a capacity to generate 12.5MW electricity.

History

The name Ramakalmedu comes from an ancient belief that Lord Rama had set his foot on this terrain while searching for demon Ravana who had abducted his queen, Sita. At the top of the hill station statues of Karuvan and Karuthi are placed which are worshipped by tourists who throng to this place in large numbers throughout the year.

The Weather

The weather is generally pleasant right through the year. Monsoon may be tough to negotiate for some as the winds hit you more strongly and the climate becomes cooler than usual. For the brave-hearted this can be the best time as the rough terrains make trekking more adventurous. The greener backdrop and the heavenly sight of various shades of green transforms you to a different plane altogether.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Ramakalmedu is from November through March. It is a good idea to go visiting the hill ranges in the monsoon season too as you can see a completely different side of the place during this time of the year.

How to Reach

By Road

Ramakalmedu is situated on the border of two southern states Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It lies 15 km east of Nedumkandam which lies on the Thekkady Munnar road. To the north is Kumili at 36 km while Munnar lies at a distance OF 70 km. There are private cars and taxis available from all these places.

By Rail

Changanacherry is the nearest railway station from Ramakalmedu. Kottayam railway station is at a distance of 150 km.

By Air

The nearest airport in Kerala is Ernakulam at 185 km while Madurai in Tamil Nadu is 145 km away.
