Ranipuram Hill Station

Ranipuram is a popular hill station that reveals the absolutely amazing side of nature at its greenest best. Located at the northern end of Kerala state in the district of Kasargod, Ranipuram remains relatively unexplored and has hence remained untouched by the ill-effects of modern civilization.

Location

Ranipuram is located 750 meters above sea level and is the district’s highest point. The place is an amazing resource of unique flora and fauna and frequented mostly by nature lovers. The large patches of swaying grasslands, lush, dense forests and unique vegetation called shola, specific to the place, make Ranipuram a must-visit destination for tourists visiting this part of Kerala.

History

Till the late 70s, Ranipuram was popularly known as Madathumala. It was renamed Ranipuram to honor the memory of Mother Mary after the title of the place changed hands. It was bought by the Catholic diocese of Kottayam from the Kandoth family. The place is quite similar to its natural look and cool climate to Ooty.

What to Look For

The dense forests of the ‘Ooty of Kerala’ is said to extend right up to the neighboring Karnataka state and merges the famous Coorg hills. There is an elephant corridor formed by Ranipuram between Karnataka and Kerala. Numerous elephants can be seen in their natural habitat on the top of the mountain ranges. They are seen when they migrate from Karnataka’s Bhagamandala forest range.

On your lucky day you may spot rare species of birds. The forest range of Ranipuram is home to more than 200 such species including the Paradise Flycatcher, the Horn Bill, the Black Eagle, Wood Pigeon, and the Crested Serpent Eagle among others.

The Proposed Wildlife Sanctuary

A wildlife sanctuary has been proposed in an area of 50 square kilometer surrounding Ranipuram which is expected to give tourism a huge boost in this district. Tourists enjoy trekking in this uncharted region which can be dangerous at times. It is advisable to move along with a guide who is familiar with the place and can alert you to potentially dangerous spots and situations.

Where to Stay

There are numerous cottages and tourist homes all along the way to Ranipuram where visitors can rest and relax. Affordable and comfortable accommodation can be availed at the state-managed Kerala Tourism Development Corporation lodges and hotels.

The Best Time to Visit

The mountain range experiences heavy rains. The whole area gets transformed during and after the monsoon as the green layers acquire varying shades of new vegetation and the green carpet appears dimensionally thicker. However, it is not advisable to visit Ranipuram during monsoon. The best time to visit is immediately after the rains from September through March.
