Pattumala Hill Station

Pattumala is a beautiful hill town also called ‘silk draped hill’ located near Peerumede in Idduki district of Kerala. It is surrounded by lush evergreen tea gardens that make this place a feast to the eyes. Pattumala is surrounded by hills and the topography makes the place ideal for engaging in various outdoor activities. Pattumala has phenomenal beauty that drives tourist to this scenic land. Silk worms were also grown by Europeans in this place hence the name silky mountains. It is located 85 km from Kottayam town and 27km to the famous Thekkady in the state of Kerala. The best way to feel the mesmerizing beauty of this place is by walking through the hills.

History

In 1965, three visionaries namely Rev. Bros. Joseph Almeida, Sergius Kottaram and Cosmos stepped into these barren hills for missionary endeavors of congregation. Then with their initiative, the then superior general of the Congregation, Franciscan Missionary Brothers acquired this land.

Lt Bro. Geralad Tanikot became first superior here and began the spade work for the development of this centre. Then Bro. Gregory began the effective farming and mission work in Pattumala. Today, this land stands as a centre of tourist attraction for pilgrims. Since then the church is ever developing as a monument cum spiritual centre.

How to Reach Pattumala

By Road

Pattumala hills are located about 17 km from Peermade and 27 km from Periyar Wildlife sanctuary. Also, it can be reached from Idukki via Dindigul-Kottarakkara Rd/Dindigul- Teni-Kottarakkara Highway/Kottayam-Kumali road NH 183.

By Air

The closest airport is Kochi International Airport which is around 150 km away from this hill station. 

By Train

The closest Railway Station is Kottayam Railway Station.

Getting Around

Getting around is easy as main modes of transport are easily available. Traveling is made easy by public transport like bus services, auto rickshaws and taxis. There are also options to rent a car and self-drive to nearby places.

Weather and Best time to visit

Best time to visit Pattumala is from September to March during the cool months. Temperature is moderate round the year. This place has pleasant weather and cool breeze during morning and evening with shiny sun. Climate usually ranges from 30 degrees maximum to 11 degrees minimum.

Attractions

Velankanni Pattumala Matha Church

This church is a Roman Catholic Church that is dedicated to the Our Lady of Good Health. It is taken care by CMSF, Congregation of the missionary Brothers of St. Francis. This church is built fully with granite and is a Marian pilgrim centre also. It is located midst of lush green tea plantations. It appears as a huge castle located on hill top surrounded by tea plantations that enhances its beauty. Velankanni Matha Church is the famous retreat centre in Pattumala Hill. This majestic church is built in granite and its scenic surroundings complete with a picturesque flower garden are ideal for a stroll, following prayer in the church. The church is on KK road from Kumily (NH-183).

Tea Plantations

The Harrisons Malayalam and AV Thomas tea plantations are the two biggest tea plantations in this state. They are a must visit while in Pattumala.

Flower Garden

Pattumala has a flower garden nearby with fascinating colors of roses, orchids and anthurium.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located 27km from Pattumala. Periyar National Park and wildlife Sanctuary is located in district of Idukki and Tathanmthitta in Kerala. It is famous for its tiger and elephant reserves. It is often called as Periyar wildlife Sanctuary. It is located in the hills of Cardamom and Pandalam of southern Western Ghats along the Tamil Nadu border.

Shopping in Pattumala

Candles are sold in the orphanage of the Matha Church. Also tea can be bought from the tea estates.

Festivals and Events

September 8 is celebrated as Birthday of Virgin Mary, the main feast of the Matha Shrine. December 8 is celebrated as Immaculate Conception of Blessed Virgin Mary and August 15 the day of Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary.

Onam is the main festival and is celebrated with joy.

Restaurants that serve good quality food can be easily located in the area of Pattumala. Pattumala provides plenty of options for eating out.

Pattumala has fewer options for hotels to stay but one can find nearby hotels to stay. Also at a distance of 10-15km one can find few hotels in Idukki.

  • Canaan valley is a hotel in Idukki and is a good option to stay near the church.
  • Lake Queen hotel is also nearby the church.
