History and Course
Hindu mythology mentions Varun as the God of rains. The river name of Varuna is derived from Varun. This river originates at Melhum. It runs east to southeast for about 100 kms, before finally merging with River Ganga of Sarai Mohana, near the holy city of Varanasi. The towns of Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Jaunpur are situated along the banks of Varuna. Some old stories also claim that the name Varanasi is derived from two names, Varuna and Assi.
