Rihand River

Located in Uttar Pradesh, the Rihand River starts its journey from the Matiranga hills and continues its sojourn till the mouth of the Son River. In Chhattisgarh, the river traces its location at the Surguja district. In Uttar Pradesh, this river is located in Sonbhadra district.

The Rihand River is a tributary of the Son River. Flowing through various cities, this river covers both Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh on a primary basis.

History

Emerging from the Matiranga hills located in the south-western portion of Mainpat plateau, Rihand River runs apparently 2000 m above sea level. The Rihand River flows in northern direction through the central Surguja district for almost 150 km. The river forms a fertile stretch from Ambikapur to Lakhanpur and into Pratappur. Crossing Pratappur the river takes its course to the north till Sonbhadra in UP. The construction of the Rihand dam took place near to Pipri in the Sonbhadra under the Mirzapur division. The primary purpose of constructing this dam was the generation of hydropower. The reservoir located behind the dam is Govind Ballabh Sagar.

Course

Arising from the Matiranga hills, the Rihand River stays almost 2000 m above the sea level. Keeping to the northern direction, the Rihand River flows through the central Surguja district and continue from Ambikapur till the Lakhanpur and to Pratappur. Along with its tributaries the river forms a fertile stretch as it runs into Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh and through Madhya Pradesh it finally reaches the river Son.

Tributaries

Its important tributaries include Mahan, Gagar, Ramdia, Geur, Morana, Gobri, and Galphulla. The rivers joining the Rihand reservoir are Kanchan, Mayar and Azir. This river also features the Rakashgand fall in its course towards the Surguja district in Chhatishgarh. This waterfall forms an important tourist destination presently.
