Baba Reshi Shrine

Gulmarg, known for its picture perfect scenic beauty all year round, is one of the many tourist destinations thronged by people both from within India and outside of it. Baba Reshi Shrinelies in natural Himalayan beauty about 5 km on the outskirts of Gulmarg. Part of Baramulla district, this shrine is at a height of about 2133 m above sea level. It’s the holy shrine of Baba Payamuddin popularly known as Baba Reshi.

This 500-year-old shrine was constructed with the architectural style of that time and it was dominated by Persian and Mughal influences. Inside the tomb are beautifully-crafted wooden artworks reminiscent of the bygone era. The tomb can accommodate more than a 1000 devotees at any given time. Surrounded by lush green lawns, this shrine attracts hordes of visitors both for its religious and historic significance. It is also believed that childless couples are blessed with one after praying here. It is a must visit on the itinerary of every visitor to Gulmarg.

The shrine can be reached by using one of the many local means of transport such as horses, sledges or field chutes. Visiting hours for the shrine are between 9 am and 5 pm daily.

Historic Significance

The shrine was built in 1480, the year of demise of Baba Reshi. He was a renowned Muslim scholar in the court of King Zain-Ul-Abidin who ruled Kashmir in 15th century. He was loyal to the king until his dying day. The shrine was built as a dedication to him. Baba was believed to have been highly respected by rulers of the Chak dynasty of Kashmir during Mughal era.

Baba Reshi was born around 1411 to a nobleman. He is supposed to have given up worldly ways after closely observing ants working hard one day. Believed to have been a disciple of Baba Zainuddin Reshi, he moved to Ramboh village as per his guru’s directions. Once there, he helped the villagers and performed miracles for their benefit. He also built a daan or fireplace where people to this day offer sacrifices once their wishes are fulfilled.

Getting There and Around


By Air

Srinagar is the closest airport to Gulmarg located around 56 km away. Srinagar is well connected by regular flights from Delhi and other Indian cities. Jeeps or Taxis are available at the airport to complete the rest of the journey up to Gulmarg.

By Rail

Jammu Tawi is easily accessible from Gulmarg. This station at Jammu received trains from many parts of India like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and even Trivandrum.

By Road

Gulmarg is well connected by an efficient bus network. A number of state-owned and private buses ply from various cities in Jammu and Kashmir. Many private tourist deluxe luxury buses operate from Srinagar, Sonmarg and other parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Best Time to Visit

Gulmarg is a great tourist spot to visit in all seasons and all year around. However, the best time to visit would be between March and October. The beginning of March and ending June is a perfect time to experience pleasant summer. Monsoon set in during July and August. However, rains here do not cause any major disruption to tourists. Infact, this is the time to enjoy scenic beauty.

Winter months from November to February are an ideal time to enjoy skiing and make for a great honeymoon spot at that time of the year. Gulmarg presents a beautiful views accompanied by frequent snowfall during this period.

Summer months offer the perfect opportunity to enjoy adventure sports and do quite a bit of sightseeing.
