Magnetic Hills

Magnetic Hill is known as the gravity hill, situated near Leh, Ladakh. The “Magnet Hill” is located on the Leh-Kargil and Baltic national highway, around 50 kms from Leh and at an altitude of 11,000 feet above the sea level. On its south lies the Indus River, this begins from Tibet and goes all the way to Pakistan.

In Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir lies a hill near Gurudwara Pather Sahib which is better known as the charismatic hill. This is the one and only hill in India which has magnetic properties in it. There is a very immense gravitational pull on this hill. The magnetic effect can be experienced by switching off the engine of your car. The car will start moving in the upward direction of the inclined road. One can also experience the fascinating outcome in the form of jerks while travelling through planes, especially when the planes cross the magnetic Hill. At this time, the Pilot will have to increase the speed of the airplane. The first Guru of Sikh Region, Guru Nanak Dev ji sat on this area whilst returning from Tibet to Punjab by the way of Kashmir. The question that arises in everyone's mind is why Guru Nanak Dev ji selected the place near magnetic hill for meditation. It is believed that there exists is a secret relation between the Magnetic Hill and the Gurudwara Pather Sahib. Each year, a huge number of tourists from all around the world visit the Magnetic Hill, mainly to consume the Langer (meals) at the Gurudwara Sahib.

Tourism in Magnetic Hills

The home administration has also installed a tab board to help tourists identify the Magnetic Hill. The board noticeably describes the complete phenomenon. This helps one enjoy the entire experience as soon they reach the hill.

Many tourists from around the world gather here to experience this Himalayan wonder. It is stated by the locals and also the ITBP (Indo Tibetan Boarder Police) offices that this magnetic field can also be experienced while flying atop the magnetic Hill. If the helicopters and airplanes flying above the magnetic hill come within the radius of magnetic hill, the plane will start to jerk continuously. It is advised to fly within the recommended speed and height above the Magnetic Hill to avoid accidents. The Indian Air force pilots are aware of this phenomenon and usually avoid the area entirely. The Magnetic Hill has become a major tourist attraction because of anti-gravity phenomenon observed on the hill. Even as mystery shrouds the reason behind this gravity defying phenomenon, Magnetic Hill continues to attract tourists in droves.

How to Reach Magnetic Hills

By Air

Normal flights from Delhi, Chandigarh, Jammu, and Srinagar are scheduled to fly to Leh by various diverse airlines providers.

By Road

The Srinagar - Leh road with a distance of 440 km is open for travel from June to November and is one of the oldest road routes to Leh Ladakh. Almost every part of the journey will take place through the hiking mountains on this road. One can also take in the striking view of the Himalayan Mountain during this journey. The J&K SRTC (Jammu Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation) provides Deluxe and normal bus services through Srinagar and Leh. Taxis are also accessible from Srinagar.

The New Manali - Leh road, with a distance of 475km, is another highly preferred land route to Leh Ladakh. It covers the snow laden peaks of the Western Himalaya and will be available to the public from July to October, depending on the climate and environment conditions.

Best Time to Arrive

The perfect time to reach this beautiful and remarkable place is between the months of July to October, as the winters are freezing cold. This time of the year offers the best to tourists in terms of scenery and weather conditions.
