History

Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib was constructed in 1783 after Baghel Singh, the Sikh military leader, seized Delhi on March 11, 1783. During his short stint in Delhi, he contributed to the construction of several Sikh shrines in the city.

After the execution of Guru Teg Bahadur, Bhai Lakhi Shah Banjara, one of the Guru’s disciples, and Bhai Naghaiya, Bhai’s son, carried the headless body of the Guru without anybody’s knowledge and cremated him. Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib was built on the very spot.

The severed head of Guru Teg Bahadur was taken by Bhai Jaita, another devotee of the Guru, to Anandpur Sahib, which is 500 kilometers from Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib located in Chandi Chowk. This gurudwara is built on the spot where Guru Teg Bahadur was beheaded. \
