Someshwara Wild Life Sanctuary
Someshwara Wild Life Sanctuary is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South India. It is a combination of semi-evergreen and evergreen forests and spread over a large area. The wildlife sanctuary offers a natural habitat to many animals and birds. The forests and the dense greenery of the place make it the ideal place for animals to live and nurture.
Location
Someshwara Wild Life Sanctuary is located in Someshwara, a quiet hamlet in the Udupi district of Karnataka. The wildlife sanctuary encompasses an area of 88 square kilometers and is made of two parts, both unconnected with one another. The smaller area of the sanctuary is located to the southwest of the major part. To the west of the sanctuary is Agumbe which lies on the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Agumbe was once the place with the highest rainfall in Karnataka. The place was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1974.
Flora and Fauna
Apart from the evergreen and semi-evergreen, the sanctuary also has medicinal herbs and plants that are rare and invaluable. Some of the trees that can be identified in this forest are fig, teak, sandal wood, rose wood, wild mango, silk cotton, jackfruit, Nandi, crocodile bark tree and others. The animals that are found in these forests include tiger, lion, leopard, a variety of deer such as spotted, barking and sambar, bonnet macaque, langur, wild pig, jackal, wild dog, long tailed macaque, and many more.
There are a number of unique and beautiful birds that visitors to the sanctuary can spot on a bright, sunny day. These include rare birds like the Ceylon frog-mouth, pied hornbill, the whistling thrush and trogon from Malabar, Kingfisher, jungle fowl, owl and owlets, forest eagles and many others. Various varieties of reptiles are also seen in the sanctuary such as the monitor lizard and snakes like python, vipers, King Cobra, cobra and the like.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Someshwara Wild Life Sanctuary starts from October through April just after the monsoon season. It can be tough visiting the place during monsoon because of the torrential downpour that this area experiences. Summer can be tough to bear out because of the adverse climatic conditions.

There are excellent staying facilities at Udupi which is about an hour by road to Someshwara wildlife sanctuary. There are affordable as well as five-star staying facilities in Udupi.

The Someshwara Wild Life Sanctuary is open to visitors from 6 AM to 6 PM on all days.
How to Reach
By Road
Someshwara Wild Life Sanctuary is 46 km from Udupi on the Udupi-Agumbe Road and at the junction of roads that leads to Shimoga/Kundapur. The sanctuary is on the state highway No. 65. You can take a direct bus from Udupi or Manipal.
By Rail

By Air
