Arabithittu Wildlife Sanctuary

The Arabithittu Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Mysore district and is said to be spread over an area of 13.5 kms. One can find plantations of sandalwood and eucalyptus. When we talk of animal species, one can spot Leopard, fox, spotted deer, etc. It just does not end over here as this park boasts of more than 230 species of birds that have been observed over here in this park all these years. The Arabithittu State Forest is inside this wildlife sanctuary and is located in Mysore District at Hunsur Taluk of Karnataka State. It lies between latitudinal range 12º 17' 16" to 12º 20' 41" North and longitudinal range 76º 22' 43" to 76º 28' 51" East. This place also known as the Hunsur Territorial range. The chain link installed by the Defense Research Development Organization of Ministry of Defense is the boundary of the sanctuary. Also, the quarries located near to this sanctuary have been banned from operation. Also, the pressure by the adjacent farmers for grazing land is very high.

Many villages dot around this wildlife sanctuary and also no one can spot any other forest in the radius of 40 kms in the surrounding villages. Small timber and firewood is what the farmers used to depend on these forests.

Flora & Fauna

This wildlife sanctuary is a mild sanctuary that is located south central part of the Mandya district. It was in 1985, on 30th April when this was declared as a sanctuary. It is spread over an area of 14 sq km. When we talk of plantations, there are scrub forests and plantations and is also dotted by the agricultural fields.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit this wildlife sanctuary is from December to February where the winters are not very harsh and roaming in the wilderness is very easy.

There are many guest houses and several hotel services that can easily availed by the tourists. These places are very close to the Hunsur Town and the Mysore City for the convenience of the people.

By Road

Many buses ply from Mysore to KR Nagar on a daily basis.

By Rail

The nearest railhead is in KR Nagar.

By Air

The nearest airport is in Mysore.
