Significance of Gurudwara Manji Sahib, Alamgir

There are a few legends attached to Gurudwara Manji Sahib and the surrounding sarovar or water body. It is said that in 1705, the tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh visited Alamgir to rest and refresh. After the battle of Anandpur Sahib where his sons and mother were killed by the Mughals, he visited the village disguising in the cloak of saint of Ucch sitting in a palanquin. He was accompanied by a few Sikh brothers and two Pathan brothers namely Nabi Khan and Ghani Khan. They carried him on the palanquin and stayed in Alamgir for a few days to evade the Mughal army.

On reaching Alamgir, the group did not find any drinking water. The guru asked an old lady in the area for water. She said the place was in ruins and there was no water available in the area except for a well which was located at a distance. She also said that there was a python living around the well and no villagers dared to go near the well. On hearing this, the guru headed towards the well and shot the python with an arrow. The python fell into the well contaminating the water. The Guru again shot an arrow in the earth from where a spring gushed and everyone bathed and drank water from the spring. Today, this spring is known as the Tirsar and people believe that whoever takes a bath with full faith in this sarovar all his miseries and pains are cured.

When the horse traders in the village came to know about the guru’s presence in the village, they gifted him a horse after which the guru asked the Pathan brothers to leave because he knew they would fall in trouble for helping him. Guru Gobind Singh stayed in Alamgir for three days. The palanquin in which the guru travelled has been preserved at the Gurudwara Manji Sahib which has been built next to the Tirsar. People can see the palanquin even today.

Construction of Gurudwara Manji Sahib, Alamgir

Gurudwara Manji Sahib is constructed on the site where Guru Gobind Singh took a halt and rested for three days. This is also the site where he was gifted the horse and he discarded the palanquin. The Gurudwara is a holy shrine and is visited by devotees as well as tourists because of its religious importance and an important landmark in the Sikh history.
