Bihar - Land of Pilgrimages Places for all Religions

Bihar is believed to be one of the most ancient places inhabited by people. Human habitat can be traced 3000 years before in the places which are now part of Bihar. Bihar has a rich culture and history. It has some of the popular historic monuments and remains of the Buddhist culture. Bihar is visited by approximately 6 million tourists every year. The places like Bodh Gaya, Vaishali, Nalanda and Patna (earlier Pataliputra) are some of the popular tourist destination in the state.

The state is located in the Gangetic plains with Nepal to its north, West Bengal in the east and south and Uttar Pradesh to its west. The river Ganga divides the state into two halves while flowing from west to east. The economic and social condition of Bihar is in very bad state. Tourists will find the journey through the state very cumbersome.

The state can be divided into four regions based on the local dialect spoken and the rivers flowing in the region. The languages spoken in these areas are Maithili, Bhojpuri, Magadhi and Angika. All these languages together form the ‘Bihari' language which is believed to have originated from the ancient language “Magadhi Prakrit” which was spoken by Lord Buddha and the people of Magadha region.

Bihar state acts as a gateway for people going towards the eastern part of the country and western part towards Delhi. The state is well connected by train, road and flights.
