The magnificent city of Chandigarh has a fabulous history as a city was the vision of our first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The grand city was designed by popular French architect Le Corbusier. The city reflects the modern architecture of 20th century.

The name of city is adopted from the temple called "Chandi Mandir" which is situated in the vicinity the city. The goddess ‘Chandi’ is the symbol of power. There is a famous fort, locally known is garh, from which the city was named Chandigarh.

The city has beautiful ancient, pre-historic and medieval past, which has given us a beautiful modern era. It was well known as Harappa, which was about 8000 years ago. Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab, which was approved in March 1948. The city is a witness of many refugees after freedom, who settled here after the partition.

Rock Garden

Rock Garden in Sector 1 is an exclusive attraction as Chandigarh. The city is also known for its artistic galleries created out of urban and industrial wastes. The raw supplies are shaped into beautiful images of human beings and animals and even trees. The garden was established by Nek Chand in 1957.

The rock garden is located between Sukhna Lake and Capitol Complex, which are also worth watching.

Open hand

Open hand located in sector 1 has very popular monuments of the city. As the name suggests, the open hand is a giant hand about 14 meters high rotates around depending on wind speed showing the direction of wind. It is a city emblem.

Capitol Complex in sector 1 houses the Government seat.

Leisure Valley

Leisure Valley, Sector 1 planned by Le Corbusier has green landscape with gardens and parks. It is the most popular tourist attraction. It consists of Bougainvillea garden which is in Sector 3. There is an amazing garden of roses present in Sector 16.

Zakir Rose Garden

Zakir Rose Garden, Sector 16 is also worth visiting. The Garden is known after previous President Dr. Zakir Hussain.

The city is rich in its culture and tradition. The city shows different types of cultures living with each other as one. The city has important central Government organizations, nationalized banks and research institutions, which has brought people from all corners of India. Climatic Conditions of Chandigarh

  • Winters (November to February) are very cold with temperature between 7 °C to 20 °C, and it goes down up to 2 °C to 5 °C. Frost is a frequent event during winters.
  • Summers (March to May) are hot and temperatures go up to 35 °C to 42 °C. It can reach up to 45 °C. It is better to avoid this time.
  • Monsoons (June to August) are muggy, humid and sometimes cool. The temperature is less.
  • Autumn (September and October) has a temperature between 13 °C to 36 °C, which is pleasant.

Best Time to Visit

The city is September to March as the temperature is great, neither hot nor very cold. June to August is gorgeous with release from the hot climate and best for short trips.

How to Reach


By Road

Road travel is excellent. There are major highways which are Ambala-Kinnaur 21 and Chandigarh-Leh 22, that provides a common way to connecting the city with different states. There are many pilgrimage spots around the city. There are many air-conditioned, deluxe and semi-deluxe buses available.

By Train

The trains are best way to commute. The trains like Himalayan Queen and Shatabdi Express connect Chandigarh to Delhi.

By Air

It is very comfortable to travel the city from Leh, Amritsar, and Delhi. The airport is situated just 12 km from city center.
