Sangrur

Sangrur is a land with fertile and rich soil with abundant water supply. The recent establishment and development of the city was observed around 2300 B.C. The people from the lands of Baluchistan and Sindh came to this fertile land in search of a better livelihood. They reached in this flourishing land from Sutlej, also known as Ghagger, which is located in Rohira. The soil was fertile and full of treasures of minerals which gave a boost to the farming sector. The development was noticed fast yet steady. People then started building sturdy houses out of bricks which were sun dried.

The land flourished in many other trades of commerce. People arrived from various places. There was a huge market for pottery of the best quality. The houses were more spacious and built from good quality raw materials. The construction and city layout was impeccable. Sangrur was established about 400 years back by a Jatt, who was one of the Sanghu.

Sheesh Mahal

As the name suggests, it is the palace full of mirrors. It is also known as Palace Of Mirrors. Sheesh Mahal is located 22 km from Sangrur and it is one of the most important tourist attractions. The palace consists of large amounts of varied glass work. This marvel was created by Maharaja Narinder Singh in 1847. The palace is beautiful and is beautified with amazing gardens and fountains.

Banasar Garden

The Banasar Garden is a favorite picnic spot in Sangrur district. The main attraction of Banasar garden is a building which consists of 12 doors made from marble Baradari. The building is in the midst of a pond, which can be reached by making a journey across a small bridge.

Gurudwara Janam Asthan

A pious and holy Gurudwara is located at Cheema. The place is 20 km away from the main Sangrur city. The Gurudwara gives a sense of reverence and serenity. It is known as the birthplace of Sant Baba Attar Singh. It is one of the most important holy shrines. There is a big fair organized in the month of Chet. It is a very important event and huge number of people visits this Gurudwara.

Gurudwara Akoi Sahib

Gurudwara Akoi Sahib has its own grandeur as it was visited by the 1st, 6th and 9th gurus of Sikh, which were Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived here from Nanakiana Sahib in Mangwal Village in 1504. Upon the blessings of the Guru, this placed turned into a flourishing city. The Gurudwara is located just 5 km to the north of Sangrur.

Gurudwara Nanakiana Sahib

This Gurudwara is also well known as Karir Sahib. Gurudwara Nanakiana Sahib is present in a village of Mangwal. It is 4 km away from Sangrur city located on the road of Sangrur-Patiala. It is well known here that Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited this place, as it was present in the village where Guru Nanak Dev Ji used to reside.

Sita Sar

It is a well known water pond which is located 20 km away from Sangrur city. It is very popularly known that this is the place where Sitaji, wife of Lord Ram, washed her hair. She was sent away by Lord Ram. There is a popular Sheetla Mata Mandir located to the south of Sita Sar.

Gurudwara Jandsar Sahib

This is a holy shrine where Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji visited. The Gurudwara is 22 km away from Sunam town. This place was later converted into Gurudwara and the tree to which Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji tied the horse is still preserved with great devotion.

Gurudwara Jhira Sahib

This Gurudwara is also visited by 1st, 6th and 9th gurus. The place is located 18 km from Sangrur city. It is situated on the Sangrur-Ludhiana road which also leads to Kanjha village.

Gurudwara Patshahi IX

It is located at 19 km distance from Sangrur district on the road of Sangrur-Patiala to Bhawanigarh town. The Gurudwara is well known to bestow the good wishes and fulfill the desires of the devotees. Guru Tegh Bahadur ji visited this place along with his mother and 300 followers. Their journey ended at this Gurudwara and Guruji stayed here for two days.

Gurudwara Wadda Ghalughara Sahib

This holy Gurudwara is a symbol of bravery and sacrifice of the martyrs who fought the war against Ahmad Shah Durrani. It is located 0.5 km from Rahira Railway station on the Malerkotia Ludhiana road near Rahira village.

  • The winters are cold, but dry. Winter season lasts from December to February. The temperature has really dropped down and it is very cold. It can go up to 7 degrees Celsius and maximum up to 20 degree Celsius.

Best Time to Visit

The Sangrur is from January to March. After monsoon, between October to November the climate is cooler and a good time to spend vacation. In winter, the coolest month is in January.

By Air

The nearest airport is in Chandigarh which is 125 km from Mohali. The flights are regular and frequent from Mumbai, Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi, and Jaipur. Therefore, you can travel from many distant cities to Mohali. You can take a taxi from the airport, it charges Rs. 7 per/km.

By Road

There are numerous buses from Chandigarh which will cost from Rs. 75 to Rs. 100 and it will take 2 and 2½ hour to reach Sangrur. Sangrur is connected to many other neighboring cities and there is good bus facility.

By Train

Trains are comfortable and cheap options. You will get many choices from Delhi. The second class train ticket will cost Rs. 130, which is an economical and comfortable journey. You can get autos from the railway station to your destination in Sangrur.
