Nangal Lake is situated on the foothills of Shivalik ranges in Ropar district, Punjab, India. The beautiful lake is formed due to construction of Nangal dam. The name Nangal came after the name of Nangal Nikku small village. This is an artificial lake which is 6 Km long shaped by the Nangal dam; it is the winter home of up to 40,000 migratory birds. This lake is a heaven for bird lovers. However, numerous migratory birds are seen here, but Sarus Crane was the most thrilling discovery which was long notion to be vanished in Punjab. The Ministry Environment has involved Nangal in the national directory of wetlands because of its avian diversity. Nangal Lake has been announced as National wetland by Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India in Jan 2008 and it has spread over an area of 400 ha.

Nangal Wetland

It is a beautiful small town located just at a distance of 100km from Chandigarh in Punjab in northwest India. The wetland is situated at 31°22'N 76°23'E / 31.37, 76.38 and has an average elevation of 1069 feet (326 metres). The wetland is surrounded by Sutlej River, canals and beautiful hills. It is the major attraction for tourists. It has gained the huge popularity in 1955 with the foundation of construction of the Bhakra Dam on the Sutlej River. Now it has turned into a blooming township attracting thousands of travellers due to the powerful and versatile Bhakra Dam Project and splendid Nangal Lake.

The Nangal town situated on the foothills of Shivalik ranges is segregated into two parts which are Nangal Township and Naya Nangal. Naya Nangal is known as a fertilizer complex of National Fertilizers Ltd and if we talk about of facilities, cleanliness and natural beauty, it is the best town in all over India.

Bhakra Dam

Bhakra Dam is a concrete gravity dam athwart the Sutlej River and is located near the border between Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in northern India. The Bhakra dam is Asia's second highest at 225.55 m (740 ft) high after the Tehri Dam (261m) also in India. The length of the dam is 518.25 m, it is 9.1 m wide. The lake, known as the Gobind Sagar stores up to 9.34 billion m3 of water can adequately drain entire Chandigarh, some portion of Haryana, Delhi and Punjab. The reservoir is 90 Km long and made by the Bhakra Dam which spreads over an area of 168.35 km2.

Best Time to Visit

To visit this lake the perfect time is from November to March.

By Air

The nearest airport to Nangal is Chandigarh (100Km) and Ludhiana (72 Km). Taxi and bus services are available from this airport to reach the destination.

By Rail

The regular trains runs from other major cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Amritsar etc. to Nangal. After reaching the Nangal railway station, once can hire a taxi to reach the Nangal Lake.

By Road

The Nangal town has good road connectivity with other town and cities. Luxury and state transport bus services are available at affordable price.
