Benthe
While describing about Benthe, a little description of Jammu and Kashmir becomes very essential. Jammu and Kashmir is very popular across the globe not only because of the serene natural beauty but also the art forms of this place. Be it the handicraft of the artists or dancing and singing of folk performers, all are extremely mesmerizing. It is of extreme pleasure to witness the valleys, mountains and lakes of Kashmir and also to be a part of the cultural activities of this paradise. Benthe is one such folk expression in the form of dance and singing by mainly two tribes of Kashmir – Gujjars and Bakarwals.
Gujjars and Bakarwals
The ethnicity of the Bakerwals and Gujjars are same. When divided ‘bakar’ and ’wals’, describes the bakarwals: the first part bakar means goats and wals means the care takers. Hence, Bakarwals are goatherds or shepherds by profession. Though some Gujjars in other parts of India are believed to be Hindus as they worship the sun god, but in Kashmir they are mainly Muslims. Since, they are of the same ethnic group with that of Bakarwals, intercaste marriages happen freely in them.
Performance
The Gujjars and Bakarwals participate in the Benthe form of dancing and singing. The singing is done by 5-7 performers while the other people dance. Thus, this form of folk expression is bit exclusive to the tribal community of the Gujjars and Bakarwals.
