Lassi
Lassi is a famous traditional drink in the entire Punjab and neighboring states prepared from yogurt. The traditional Punjabi lassi is either Sweet or Salty. The sweet lassi contains curd, water, fruits, spices and sugar where as the salty lassi contains water, curd, salt and cumin seeds.
Yogurt has a mythological importance and is used during religious rituals mixed with honey. Lassi is also served by mixing with cream and milk. Lassi is served with ice cubes in summer season to beat the scorching heat. Lassi with a pinch of turmeric powder is an excellent remedy for stomach disorders.
Chaas
Chaas or chaach is similar to lassi, but it is a salty drink. Chaas also has more water than lassi. Further, the butterfat of the curd is removed to make Chaas. Cumin seeds (Jeera) and Salt are usually added to Chaas to make it healthier. Some people also add green chillies, fresh sliced ginger and coriander leaves for enhancing the taste. Chaas is commonly had in almost all Indian states. They are part of the daily meal in states like Rajasthan and Gujarat. Chaas is considered as an excellent drink which helps in digestion. It is consumed in abundant quantities in India and Pakistan during summer season to beat the heat. It is known by different names in different states. It is called 'taak', 'majjige', 'majjiga' in Marathi, Kannada and Telugu respectively. 'Moru' is the name by which it is known in Malayalam and Tamil.
