Gajanur Dam

Gajanur is a well known small village situated at a distance of approximately 12 km from the place called Shimoga. Shimoga is located on Thirthahalli road. Tunga River flows through this Gajanur Village. This entire place is most popular for its dam that was constructed across Tunga River. About one kilometer from Gajanur is a place known as ‘Sakkarebaylu’, the most popular elephant training camp maintained by Government of India. Approximately 15 km from this place lays Mandagadde bird life sanctuary. Near Gajanur, there is JNV, Gajanur. JNVG is a boarding school funded by Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Construction

MCC built the dam together with its additional works, towards the downstream of already present anicut across Tunga River near the village of Gajanur, Shimoga. The dam covers total distance of about 770 metres. This length also includes 334 metres of spillway. This work was completed with 2, 47,000 cubic metre of concrete material.

Nearby Tourist Attractions

Sakrebayalu Elephant camp is situated about one kilometer from this Gajanur Dam. One can see the elephants that are being trained by experts on this bank of Tunga River. Orphaned small elephants that are left alone by its herds are provided good shelter at this place. Well experienced mahouts train and tame these elephants. It is the best place to visit with children. There is also a chance to play with giant elephants in this water.

How to Reach

By Road

Gajanur has got good connectivity by road. One can prefer a train or bus from all major cities of State of Karnataka to Shimoga. From Shimoga, there is a local bus or taxi facility towards Gajanur Dam.

By Train

The nearest railway station is at Shimoga. Shimoga is well connected with all places and major cities in India.
