Shanti Sagara

Shanti Sagara is the second biggest lake and largest irrigation tank in Asia. It is ideally situated in Davangere in Channagiri Taluk of Karnataka, India. Locals here affectionately call is Sulekere. The sprawling irrigation tank consists of water and spreads across 2651 hectares and minimum of 65 km radius. This lake is close to Bhadhara Right Bank Canal, which is also used to fill up Shanti Sagara.

Construction

This tank has a history of 8000 years as its construction dates back to 1128. Sulekere is the biggest human made tank in India and it is said that the construction of the tank took 3 years.

Major Tourist Attraction

It is a major picnic spot destination in Davangere district. A guest house has been exquisitely built near the irrigation tank recently to attract foreign and domestic tourists. Activities like boating and allied facilities are available here.

This place also has the holy Sidhaeshwara temple, which comprises a stone engraved gateway along with two dvarpala on both the sides holding a mace in each hand. A huge festival is celebrated on the day of Maha Shivaratri by all local people and major tourists at this temple.

An aqueduct built by M. Vishweshwariah also holds high tourist interest. Mallapana Mitti, also known as Mallikarjuna Temple is located on a hill of Shanti Sagara lake. It is also visited by numerous tourists.

Other places of interest:

  • Channagriri Fort, which is located 20 km from Shanti Sagara.
  • Kudli, which is situated at 40 km and is a centralized place where two known rivers Tunga and Bhadra meet and form the largest river Tunga Bhadra.
  • Santhebennur is also closeby and a popular tourist attraction.

How to Reach

Shanti Sagara is located almost at a distance of 20 km from Channagiri and around 40 km from Davanagere.

Tourists can easily reach Shanti Sagara from Bangalore which is approximately 265 km away and from Davangere around 40 km.
