Kanakanala Dam

The state of Karnataka has several reservoirs and dams built across prominent rivers. The Kanakanala Dam is one such reservoir built across river Kanakanala and sub stream of Tungabhadra at Killarhatti village in Kustagi taluk of Raichur district. The river Kanakanala is a main tributary of Krishna River.  The Kanakanala Dam is situated in Raichur district of Karnataka state in India. This dam was constructed in 1975 to cater for the requirement of hydroelectric project. The water of this dam is utilized as supply to the turbines of electricity generation stations. Kanakanala dam site is ideal for evening walk. The peaceful environment in and around the dam provides ample scope for picnic and enjoyment. The clear water flowing from the dam provides lot of happiness to the onlookers. The scene of sun set is the most fascinating thing at Kanakanala Dam.

Construction

The dam has been catering for the requirements of irrigation of the nearby villages since its construction in 1975. The length of the reservoir is 975.65 meters and the height of the dam is 20.12 meters. The construction type of this dam is Earthen and it has anOgee type of spillway.

Historical Monuments

  • Bala Hisar: It is a popular citadel situated on top of a hill. Tourists can have an excellent view of the Raichur Fort’s interiors from this place.
  • Raichur Fort: Raichur Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state of Karnataka. It was built in the year 1294 by the famous Kakatiya rulers. There are various inscriptions in the Fort in Telugu language. The star attraction of the Fort is a stone slab which is more than forty feet long.
  • Pir Sailani Shah Tomb: The tomb of popular Muslim saint, Pir Sailani Shah constructed in the Bijapur architectural style containing a dome and rectangular hall attracts numerous tourists.

Religious Sites

  • Jami Masjid: Jami Masjid is regarded as the oldest mosque in Raichur. The magnificent structure constructed using stone pillars and containing two entrances is a popular place of visit for the tourists.
  • Markandeshwara Temple: As the name suggests, Lord Shiva the ruling deity of the temple is visited in the form of Markandeshwara. This is also a popular attraction for visitors.
  • Ek Minar Ki Masjid: This mosque constructed in the Persian architecture style has a twenty meter high minaret. The minaret provides excellent view of the complete Raichur city.

How to Reach

By Air

Hyderabad International Airport located at a distance of 194 km is the nearest International Airport. However, there is a domestic airport located at Bellary at a distance of 125 km.

By Road

Raichur is well connected with bus facilities from other prominent cities in Karnataka and neighboring Andhra Pradesh state. There are regular KSRTC buses plying between Raichur and cities like Mangalore, Mysore, and Bangalore etc.

By Train

The nearest railway station from the dam site is Raichur Railway Station. It is a prominent railway station in the South Central Railway with good train connectivity.
