Kavala Caves

Reaching Kavala Caves can be a challenge in itself as devotees have to climb down 375 steps and then crawl 40 feet further to reach the cave entrance. The limestone caves here are a huge attraction among tourists who come to Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, which lies alongside the Kavala caves.

The Beauty of Caves

Kavala caves have been formed from deposits of limestone which gives it a unique appearance. Kali River forms a perfect backdrop for Kavala caves which see a huge rush of visitors and devotees on any given day. Shivaratri is a special event at the cave temple and ample preparations are made for the grand event. The Shiva Linga is a special attraction of the cave temple as it is around 4 feet in height and 3-4 feet in diameter.

The back journey from the caves is special and one gets to view the River Kali in its natural flow.

The Mystic Caves

The unique location of the Kavala caves makes it a perfect destination for a weekend getaway. Located in the heart of Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, a visit to the caves serves the dual purpose of paying obedience to Lord Shiva and exploring the hinterlands of the Western Ghats. The natural formation of Shiva Linga from stalagmites is another attraction of the cave temple which draws the attention of the visitors and devotees alike.

A unique feature of the cave is its stalagmite formations from which water drips on the main Shivalingam. Since the Kavala caves are located within the core area of Dandeli- Anshi Tiger Reserve, the chances of having a faceoff with the mighty tiger are real. Otherwise also, other animals like Elephants, Bisons, Sāmbhar and Chital are found in fair numbers in the cave area.

Torches and flashlights need to be carried into the caves as it can get pitch dark in the interiors as no lighting arrangements are available apart from on Shivaratri which is a special day at the Kavala caves.

The main temple complex within the Kavala caves is wide enough to accommodate up to ten people at any given time. This is unique in itself as otherwise the steps leading to the cave are narrow, even for a single person.

The decent up from the cave is an enchanting experience in itself as one comes across the famous Sykes Point. Enchanting view of River Kali from Sykes point can be an unforgettable experience for any visitor.
