Hulimavu Cave Temple

The Samadhi of a saint who did meditation in the caves of Hulimavu is the first thing that attracts the attention of devotees at the cave temple in Hulimavu. The temple also known by the name of Hulimav Shiva Cave Temple is located in Hulimavu on the Bannerghatta Road in the state of Karnataka. The cave temple is administered by Sri Sri Bala Gangadaraswami Mutt.

The Beauty of Caves

Idols of three deities namely a Shiva Lingam, a Devi idol and a Ganesh idol occupy the centre stage in the Hulimavu Cave Temple. A Dhyan mandap located inside the temple complex is another specialty of Hulimavu cave temple. Devotees can be seen meditating in the Dhyan mandap at any given hour of the day.  

Various murals and other inscriptions point out that the cave temple is around four to five hundred years old. The cave temple has been cut from a monolithic rock. January 14th is a special day for Hulimavu cave temple as the beam of sunlight illuminates Shivalingam in such a manner that it first touches the statue of Nandi and finally reaches the base of Shivalingam. This is the only day in the whole year that the inner sanctum of the Hulimavu cave temple gets illuminated. The sight is beautiful indeed and devotees make a beeline to the cave temple on this day.

The Mystic Caves

Hulimavu cave temple is located inside natural caves within rocks. This makes it a perfect location for practising meditation. The location of Dhyan mandap within the cave complex makes it an ideal place for meditating as the chants of devotees practising meditation reverberate throughout the temple complex. The temple is a perfect example of rock cut architecture design which was prevalent in the ancient era.

A unique aspect of Hulimavu cave temple is the presence of two big discs in the complex. A rare idol of Agni, the God of Fire is also present in the Hulimavu cave temple.

Devotees have special faith in the Hulimavu cave temple. They believe that those who worship idol of Agni find relief from any of their eye diseases. Two mysterious caves are also known to originate from the inner sanctum of the Hulimavu cave temple. Devotees believe that one of these caves goes up to Banaras in the city of Uttar Pradesh. Banaras or Varanasi is considered to be associated with Lord Shiva. The other cave, the devotees believe extent up to 10 miles to another cave temple located on a hill named as Shivagange.

By Road

Local buses, taxi and auto rickshaw can be hired from any part of Bangalore city for a comfortable journey to the Hulimavu cave temples.

By Rail

Taxis and buses can be taken from Bangalore railway station to Bannerghatta Road where the cave temple complex is located.

By Air

Bangalore International airport is the nearest air link to the Hulimavu cave temple. Taxi can be taken from the airport itself to the temple complex.
