Palampur is a popular tourist place in Himachal Pradesh, in the Kangra Valley in India. It is a green hill station located in the Himalayan foothills which is also popular for tea gardens. This place is surrounded by pine forest which looks very attractive. This place is also known as the tea capital of northwest India. Dhauladhar Mountains are another attraction of this place which stands behind this town, and whose top parts are covered with snow almost for the whole year. This place is also popular amongst the tourists for the beautiful temples and the buildings that were built during the British Rule. In fact this place offers complete glitz of a typical hill station.

Neugal Cafe

One of the greatest attractions of Palampur is the Neugal Cafe since tourists get nice view of Dhauladhar Hills from here. They also enjoy the sight of Neugal khad from this place.

Sourabh Van Vihar

This is another attraction of Palampur where the tourists find a green park.


The village of Andretta is also a famous place to visit because it is well known for the art gallery.


Several temples such as Devi Latti Jakhni’s Temple,  Chamunda Devi Temple, Baijnath (Shiv Temple), Mata Ashapuri Temple (Maa Ashapuri) and Mata Bandla Devi’s Temple are located nearby which are very nice and holy places to visit and worship. Bir and Billing is also famous Buddhist monasteries nearby to visit.

Palampur Cuisine

Most of the restaurants remain open from 10 am to 10 pm. While shopping in the market, you can have a quick lunch in Taj restaurant where food is very good and staff courteous. Hotel Surabhi too offers you mouth watering dishes. The only bar-cum-restaurant in Palampur is Hotel Sai Gardens which serves special Jain foods, Pahari cuisine, and vegetarian foods.

Shopping Attractions

Palampur is a well known place for clothing as well as fashion. You can find a wide range of showrooms of clothing in this place. Adidas, Reebok, Puma, Nike, Monte Carlo, Lee etc. are some of the branded showrooms you can find here.  For fashionable items you can visit Tibetian market.

Climate and Best Time to Visit Palampur

Palampur is known for mild temperature climate around the year. So you can visit this place anytime. However, temperatures are cool from March to June so these months are considered as the best time to visit this place. Winter and rainy seasons are not suitable for the tourists.

How to Reach

By Air

Dharamshala Airport (also known as Gaggal Airport or Kangara Airport) is nearly 40 km away from Palampur. Several airlines run their planes on a regular basis from major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai etc. to this airport. You can hire a taxi from Kangara Airport to Palampur which may charge nearly INR 750.

By Rail

Maranda railway is just at a distance of 2 km from Palampur but it is narrow gauge railway station. If you want broad gauge railway station, you have to go to Pathankot which is at a distance of 120 km from Palampur. You can hire a taxi from Pathankot to reach Palampur.

By Road

Tourist taxis are available from Delhi to Palampur but they would charge nearly INR 10000. HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) too runs Deluxe, Semi Deluxe and Air-conditioned buses to major cities Delhi, Shima, Chandigarh etc. You can book bus tickets online by visiting the website of HRTC.
