Amar Jawan Jyoti – Remembering Our Heroes

Amar Jawan Jyoti or the Flame of the Immortal Warrior is a place every visitor to New Delhi has on his or her itinerary. It marks the tomb of the anonymous warrior and also symbolizes the great sacrifices that soldiers have made for our country in the past.

Amar Jawan Jyoti is a shrine which has an eternally burning flame. It is located under the arch of the iconic structure, India Gate which is perhaps the most popular landmark in New Delhi. Situated astride the famous Rajpath, the Jyoti or flame has been burning bright since 1971. Amar Jawan Jyoti was erected under the India Gate after India played a major role in the creation of Bangladesh in December 1971. The Jyoti commemorates the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending their country.

The word Amar Jawan is inscribed in gold on every face of the cenotaph which is placed on a structure with four corners on which four torches burn eternally. Amar Jawan Jyoti was officially unveiled by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi on Republic Day of India, January 26, 1972. Today, the place is visited by all visiting state guests to pay homage to the courage and dedication of soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
