Catherine Falls located in Kotagiri is a double-cascaded waterfall sited in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the most popular tourist spots. The upper waterfall drops to the floor and is the second-highest waterfalls in the Nilgiri Mountains. The height of Catherine waterfall is about 250 ft and the waters form the upper stream of river Kallar, which is crossed by the Mettupalayam-Ooty invisible road beyond the mountains towards the south-west.

Catherine Waterfall has derived its name from the wife of M.D. Cockburn, who is believed to have introduced the coffee plantation in the area of Kotagiri. The native name of these falls is Geddhehaada Halla, which stands for “Foothills Dale River”. These falls are clearly visible from the Dolphin’s nose top and one can also reach the top of the waterfall through a road.

Catherine Falls are located in the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu in the city of Kotagiri. These falls are located on the Mettupalayam road that branches off at Aravenu. The roads that lead to Catherine falls pass through Nilgiri hills between the pine forests and tea estates. The drive to the falls offer breathtaking views with the mist appearing and disappearing at places.

The best view of the falls is offered by the Dolphin’s Nose point but these falls can also be accessed through Kotagiri.

Activities to Do

The trekking enthusiasts can indulge in trekking activities in the Longwood Shola Forest which is located at a distance of about 3 Km from Kotagiri. However, you are required to seek prior permission for this from the District Forest Officer.
