Vattakottai Fort

The Vattakottai Fort is also known as the Circular Fort. This seaside fort in Chennai is located in Kanyakumari. Built in the 18th century, this structure was meant to be a coastal fortification structure in the Travancore Kingdom. Constructed in the supervision of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, a naval official to the Dutch East India Company, the fort comprises of granite block and presently a portion of this fort extends to the sea. Protected by the Indian archaeological department, this monument went under major renovation works and presently is a popular tourist attraction.

History

Offering picturesque views of the sea and the Western Ghats, the site offers black sands, which is a unique feature. This site is approximately 7 km from the town of Kanyakumari. As you climb up, you get a great view of the sea below and you might even notice some emblems that look like fishes. Having an underground basement kind of a place, this place served to help the kings to escape when under attack. A serene place to explore, the fort splendid views of the sea. This place also reveals the architectural specialties of the south during the 18th century. Located in Agasteeswaram Taluk, this fort was built primarily by the Travancore kings. The structure was built during the rule of Marthanda Varman as a major defence strategy. This fort with a height of 25 feet has a thickness of almost 29 feet in the frontal portion. Built of stone, the fort comprises of watchtowers, weapon rooms and rest rooms. The walls featuring fish motifs are known to indicate the symbols of the Pandyas.

In the early days, one could get a clear view of the Padmanabhampuram Palace from the Fort. The fort has a 1.2 meter long secret passage or tunnel leading to the Padmanabhampuram Palace. Currently, the tunnel is closed. From a side of the parade ground, one can get a clear view of the endless Arabian Sea while, the other side gives a glimpse of the Bay of Bengal.

Visitor's Information

It is best to visit this place in November, December, February, March and April. There aren't too many facilities available near the fort, so one is advised to carry all necessary things. There are quite a few hotels located nearby where you can stay. You must visit during sunshine to catch a glimpse of the splendid play of colours. The fort is open to visitors from throughout the week from 8 am to 8 pm.

Connected to all major locations in Chennai and neighbouring states, reaching Vattakottai Fort by road isn't much of a trouble.

The Thiruvanthapuram Airport is the closest to the Vattakottai Fort and connects it to all major states in India.

You can also take the Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation Bus to reach Vattakottai Fort. Local bus and taxis are also available to reach this fort.

If you are thinking of going by train then Kanyakumari Junction is the nearest railway station.
