Pincodes that are made up 6 digits are unique numbers given to a particular area by the Postal Department for differentiating them. The pincodes of Assam begin with “78” and are followed by 4 digits. While the first two digits represent the state, the last 4 represent the district, sub-district and sorting codes of that particular area. Currently, there are around 603 pincodes prevalent in Assam in over 21 cities or districts like Lakshmipur, Nalbari, Golaghat, Kamrup, Marigaon, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, KarbiAnglong, Tinsukia, Karimganj, Sibsagar, Nagaon, Cachar, Dibrugharh, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Dhubri, Barpeta, Goalpara etc. Ever since the postal codes were introduced in India on 15th August 1972, more and more districts have been added on to Assam.
