Tamil Nadu, located towards the south of India, is a state that is blessed with abundant natural beauty, thanks to its excellent greenery and paddy fields.  Agriculture is the main occupation of the people here, just like other states in the country. Major Rivers in the State of Tamil Nadu

Bhavani River

The length of the river runs for 217km and is one of the longest rivers in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on the Western Ghats towards the Nilgiri Hills. Twelve tributaries join the river at these mountains. The river lies in the Attapatti Reserve Forest. Coimbatore and Erode districts are the places where a majority of this river passes through.

Kaveri River

This is one of the well-respected and sacred rivers of the state. It starts from the Brahmagiri Hills of Western Ghats and covers the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The political controversies behind this river are well-known facts. The total length of this river is 765km long and this river has been described by many Tamil saints and scholars in their poems and epics. The tributaries of Kaveri River are Hemavati, Shimsha, Akravathy, Bhavani, Noyyal, Amaravati, Harangi, Lokpawni and Malangi Rivers.

Vaigai River

This river stars from the Varusanadu Hills and flows across the district of Madurai. The length of this river is 258km.This River was considered to be one of the main reasons for the wealth and prosperity of Pandya Kingdom. In the earlier Tamil Sangam literary works, there was hardly any work that didn’t praise Vaigai River. The major tributaries of this river are Suruliyaru, Mullaiyaru, Varaganadi, Manjalaaru and Kridhumaal. The Vaigai Dam in Theni district is one of the most important tourist attractions of this spot.  The river is also sourced from waters from Periyar Dam located in Kerala. However, the water quantity in this river is very low and during summer seasons, it dries up completely.
