The state of West Bengal is located in the eastern part of India. It is the 4th most populated state of India. Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta is the capital of West Bengal. Two wide natural regions comprising of Himalayas and Sub Himalayan area in the North and Gangetic Plains in the south cover this state. Bay of Bengal located in the south of West Bengal adds to its scenic charm. Natural scenes and beautiful landscapes are found in abundance in West Bengal. The state also encompasses some of India’s most preferred tourist destinations. Darjeeling located in the Himalayan region, Sandakphu: the highest peak of the state and the mangrove forests of Sundarbans are few of the places that attract visitors to this state.

The architectural and cultural heritage of the state is very affluent. Kolkata is known as ‘City of Palaces’ because of its rich architecture. Terracotta temples located at Bishanpur are also one of the famous sites of West Bengal.

The coast line of West Bengal extends from Gangetic Delta to the Orissa border, ending at the Bay of Bengal in the south. Exquisite settlements like Shankarpur, Digha, Mandarmani, Gangasagara, Bakkhali, Tajpur etc. are found on the coastal strip of West Bengal. Some of the beaches at the coast are hard and one can drive through these beaches. Few decades back even Aeroplanes could be landed on Digha Beach.

Tourists from all over the world are also attracted towards the cultural heritage of West Bengal. Its deep roots in music, literature, drama, cinema and fine arts are very remarkable. Rabindranath Tagore, first Asian to win Noble prize, the composer of National Anthem of India also belonged to West Bengal.
