Uttar Pradesh is a province of north India. This province is famous for large rivers and their tributaries. The Ganga is the most sacred river for all Indians, since time immemorial. River Ganga has provided a lifeline to a huge population settled along its fertile banks. The Ganga assimilates many small and big rivers along its course. Varuna River is one such tributary.

Named after the God Varuna, the river is located near the city of Varanasi. It rises from Bhadohi. It is also called as Baranaa. The name of the city, Varanasi is also said to be derived from the name of the river.

History and Course

Hindu mythology mentions Varun as the God of rains. The river name of Varuna is derived from Varun. This river originates at Melhum. It runs east to southeast for about 100 kms, before finally merging with River Ganga of Sarai Mohana, near the holy city of Varanasi.  The towns of Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Jaunpur are situated along the banks of Varuna. Some old stories also claim that the name Varanasi is derived from two names, Varuna and Assi. These two rivers are surrounding the city.

River Varuna has proven to be useful in the irrigation of the surrounding areas along its course. Many plants grow along the banks of Varuna. Brahmi, Punarnava, Sarpagandha, Shankhapushpi are some of the useful plant varieties. These plants are used in medicinal preparations.
