Rohni River

The north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is having a feature of highest population density among Indian states. The main reason for this situation is fertile land in the region. The land became fertile due to the presence of a huge network of rivers and their tributaries passing through the state. Many of these rivers have origins in the Himalayan ranges. Some of the rivers finally merging with other rivers in India, are rising in Nepal, A country bordering India on the north side. Rohni river is one such example. Rohni is also known as Rohini in many descriptions.

History

Rohni river finds mention in Buddhist texts. One story relates to two communities, namely Sakyans and Koliyans. The kings of respective communities were ruling on opposite banks of Rohni river. Due to variations in water flow of the river, constant disputes arose about usage of river water by each community. The kings fought the war over the dispute. Another mention of Rohni river is found in travel of Siddhartha Gautama, when he crosses the river to reach a place called Kapilvastu.

Course

Sivalik Hills is a mountain range of the outer Himalayas. Rohni river rises at an elevation of 850 meters in Sivalik hills, situated in Kapilvastu and Rupandehi districts of Nepal. It flows in the southern direction and enters India. Rohni further flows and becomes left bank tributary of West Rapti river and finally merges with it. Rohni river traverses a distance of 122 kms before merging with the West Rapti river. Basin area of Rohni river is over 2600 square kms. Basin area of Rohni river falls in both nations of Nepal and India.

West Rapti river pours into Ghaghara river and finally Ghaghara merges with River Ganga. Thus Rohni river is also part of the River Ganga system through West Rapti and Ghaghara. Thus Rohni river has its own share of credit in making the area around its passage very fertile.
