The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is organized by the Ministry of External Affairs and Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam along with the Chinese Government as the location of the Mount Kailash and the Mansarovar Lake is in Tibet under Chinese jurisdiction. The pilgrimage is conducted every year between the months of July and September and each year the Ministry of External Affairs announces the Yatra dates.

The aspiring pilgrims have to apply to the Ministry online or download application forms available on the website. The application forms are accepted only up to a certain date. The selected pilgrims have to be free from all debilitating diseases such as diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, obesity etc. The selection of pilgrims is made only after a rigorous physical examination and medical tests to check the fitness of the pilgrims. Fitness is very important in the selection of the pilgrims. Only Indian citizens with a valid passport and validity for at least 6 months from the date of departure of the Yatra are considered.

The selected pilgrims then have to pay the scheduled fee. Application for the Chinese Visa with 2 photographs has also to be submitted. Other documents that have to be submitted are indemnity bond, undertaking for evacuation by helicopter and consent to be cremated on Chinese soil if death occurs have to be given.
