Established in 1883, the Feroz Shah Kotla cricket ground is the 2nd oldest international cricket stadium which is still functional in India. It is named after the emperor Feroz Shah Tughlaq. The Feroz Shah Kotla stadium is positioned at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg close to the Ambedkar Stadium.

The Stadium is of great sentimental value to the Indians owing to the sequence of wins for India in the test matches played at this stadium. The Indian National cricket team has remained undefeated for more than 20 years at this ground. The stadium has witnessed several records by Indian players.

History

The Stadium is owned and operated by the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA). The first match at this stadium was played between India and West Indies on 10th November 1948. The first notable event at the stadium was probably the 10 wickets taken by Anil Kumble in an inning against Pakistan in 1999. Following this, the stadium has witnessed several records registered by Indian players in International cricket.

After the establishment of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the stadium has become a home ground for the Delhi Daredevils. Mr. DanishSiddiqui and Naval Kanna have designed the stadium.

The stadium saw its first trouble on 29th December 2009 during the ODI match between India and Sri Lanka. The match was called off owing to the pitch conditions being recorded as unfit to host a match. Following this report by the match referee, Kotla faced a fine as well as a ban of 12-14 years. This consequentially meant a ban on hosting the 4 world cup matches scheduled at the Kotla stadium in 2011. But the ICC finally banned Kotla only for 12 months and so the stadium could become one of the venues for 2011 Cricket World Cup.

Kotla has so far seen 10 wins in test matches for the Indian team. Kotla is also India's most successful Test ground in terms of victories where India posted seven successive Test victories from 1993–2007. India has lost only 6 of 24 games since the inception of Test matches on this ground.

Cricket

Kotla is one of the best international cricketing grounds in India with an enhanced seating arrangement and longer boundaries.

The stadium has been a witness to numerous cricket records so far:

  • The highest Test total of  644/8 by West Indies against India in the 1958-59 season.
  • The lowest Test total is 75 runs by India against West Indies in the 1987-88 season.
  • The highest ODI total of 303 by Pakistan against India in the 2004-05 season.
  • India has been the most successful team, recording a highest number of victories (10) by any team in the world.
  • Besides the ten wicket haul against Pakistan in the year 1999, Anil Kumble is the most successful bowler in this sports arena with the record of 58 wickets in total.
  • Bert Sutcliffe of New Zealand has been the highest run scorer, scoring 230 (not out) versus India on December 16, 1955.
  • Dilip Vengsarkar has been the highest scoring batsmen, with a grand total of 671 runs, in all the matches played by him at the Kotla Stadium.

Renovation

The stadium has been renovated in a way to make it one of the best stadiums for international cricket. A colored seating system rising up to 20 meters above the ground has been made to ensure a complete view of the game in progress. For satisfaction of the players, a new pavillion has been set up along with renovated media center and corporate hospitality suites. For the convenience of players during day-night matches, floodlights have been installed in the stadium.

Overall the Kotla stadium now features newer pavilions for the players, enhanced ground facilities and a larger audience to view the games.
