Situated in New Delhi, the R K Khanna Tennis Complex is operated by Delhi Lawn Tennis Association. The tennis court has centre play field, six warm up courts and six actual courts to play the tennis tournaments and has a hard play playing field. A former president of All India Tennis Association, Raj Kumar Khanna’s name was given to the Tennis field. R K Khanna was also a captain of the India Davis Cup team. The tennis complex was used in the year 2010 for conducting matches during Commonwealth Games. The tennis court was also a venue for matches during Asian Games in the year 1982.

Location

The R K Khanna Tennis Complex is located at Africa Ave Road, Deer Park, Hauz Khas, New Delhi, 110016. The nearest route to reach the tennis stadium is from Green Park Metro station, post which transport service can be used to get down at gate number 12. Spectators using personal vehicle can park the vehicles at parking area of IIT Sports Complex parking and walk to gate number 12 which is at a distance of 800 metres.

Construction

The arena was inaugurated in the year 1982 but had tennis playing facility from the year 1970. The tennis complex was renovated in the year 2009 for the Commonwealth Games held in 2010 and after that often hosts international and national tennis games. The sports play area is facilitated with ultra modern sound systems and lighting technology which enables the usage of high definition camera for clicking photos and videos. The tennis court can be used for a continuous of 10 hours for professional or training events. The stadium can accommodate 5,000 people in the main court and the secondary court has seating of 1,500 people.

Eco – Friendly Features

The tennis field houses many green initiatives post its renovation, like the field has solar lighting, heating and cooling system. The sports ground has IBMS (Intelligent building management system) which helps the energy consumption for air-conditioning. Superior quality glass has been fixed within the stadium which helps reduced heating but increases light during the day. Other green projects include water management, grass pavers/grids of three acres, self-closing taps, rain water harvesting and dual flushing systems.

Uses

The stadium has upgraded its facilities to adapt to the competitive tennis infrastructure needs and established a name as the Tennis capital of India. On a daily basis the stadium is visited by 550-600 tennis enthusiasts for the purpose of training on the sport. The sports arena also conducts tennis training for learners; the hours of operations are from Monday to Saturday from 09:30am to 06:30pm and remain closed on Sunday. The R K Khanna Tennis court can be utilised by members and non-members for playing on outdoor hard court or outdoor grass court. The stadium provides accommodation facility for visiting guests.
