Indira Gandhi Sports Complex

Indira Gandhi Sports complex is an indoor stadium which is known to be the third largest stadium in Asia and the largest indoor sports field in India. The stadium is spread across 102 acres and has hosted number of national and international tournaments since its commencement. As understandable, the stadium is named after Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India. With sports events, the ground also conducts various music and political events and other local sports matches. The sports complex has a seating capacity of 14,348 people. In the year 2014, the ground hosted its first tennis tournament “International Tennis Premium League” which was attended by tennis stars. The sports arena can conduct various other sports like wrestling, cycling, and gymnastics (rhythmic and artistic).

Location

The Indira Gandhi Sports Complex is situated on the eastern side of capital city, near the Indraprastha Estate. To its west is the famous historical Ferozshah Kotla Fort and to its east is the Delhi Secretariat. To reach the Indira Gandhi Sports complex one has to board the Delhi Metro and get down at Indraprastha Metro Station and then avail the local transport till Raj Ghat Ash Ground. Private cars or vehicles can be parked at the venue at gate number 7 near the Raj Ghat Ash Ground parking area and will need to walk 300 metres. The exact address of the complex is Indira Gandhi Stadium, Sports Authority of India, ITO, Delhi - 110002.

Construction

The sports complex was built in 1982 by the government of India to host Asian Games conducted in the same year. The sports ground has been continuously  renovated to meet the modern infrastructure needs. Lately the ground was renovated in the year 2010 for Commonwealth Games, during which Velodrome (a track cycling arena) which is an internal air-conditioned field, was also built. The stadium has two warm-up halls for gymnastics and one indoor stadium with total floor area of 18,000 square metres. The entrance of the building has 4 ramps, staircase and lifts and 1st floor of the building accommodates seating arrangements.

Eco – Friendly Features

The wrestling stadium and cycling velodrome are equipped with green initiatives within the field. The wrestling field is east facing which has heat insulation system; the field has been fixed with double insulated glass, thermal protection on roof and cavity walls; the cycling track – velodrome has solar energy. Both the play areas have water conservation system and dual system flush water line.

Uses

The Indira Gandhi Sports Complex has elaborate lighting and modern audio systems which is suitable for HDTV (high definition television) transmission. The complex has a lush green area with soundproof synthetic walls and centralised air conditioning system. The sports facility includes gymnastics wooden area which can be used for other sports events. For sport events electronic score boards are available with video screens. The sports complex has international facilities for VIP’s, sports personalities, media persons, sports officials.etc. The sports arena is equipped with safety systems like fire alarms and fire fighting systems.
